Today, many people have bio-fireplaces, traditional wooden hearths or potbelly stoves in their country houses. Some prefer an exact copy of historical models, others adhere to strict symmetry in the design of such a device. Fireplaces are decorated with carvings, bas-reliefs, sculptures, and various paintings. However, without natural firewood you will not warm your home or soul. Ensure the operation of stove equipment using natural fuel - wood.

What are they needed for
Artificial firewood in an electric fireplace
Many will ask the question: why are such dummies needed? Well, firstly, it's a matter of aesthetics. And secondly, you don’t need deep knowledge of stove equipment to notice the difference between a fireplace with an electric heating element and a wood-burning fireplace.
Due to the absence of smoke and rapid heating of the room, electric fireplaces are an advantage when compared with a wood-burning fireplace. But with all this, a certain naturalness of the hearth is lost, its charm and charm are lost. If you add dummy firewood to such a design, the picture of the fireplace changes radically.
This situation is especially relevant for a city apartment, where installing a real fireplace is simply impossible.
General points
First of all, let’s formulate more precisely the idea of why such dummies are still needed. The main goal of dummies of firewood for an electric fireplace or bio-fireplace is to make them as similar as possible to the classic analogue that runs on solid fuel. Because if you compare these devices in finished, assembled form, the striking differences immediately catch your eye. Ceramic decorative firewood attracts attention, covers the design details, improves the aesthetic appearance of the device and creates a clearer atmosphere in general.
Modern electric and biological fireplaces do not emit smoke or heat; for the most part, they are purely decorative devices. That is why the naturalness of what is happening is not felt to the proper extent, and the aura of true comfort is slightly blurred.
Decorative logs that imitate real wooden firewood are designed to bring back this unique feeling. They allow you to create an excellent visual sequence, which, together with our subconscious, complements the overall picture with the necessary elements.
Successful imitation of birch firewood
It is not possible to install a real stove or fireplace in a city apartment, but an ecological or electric option is quite acceptable. To make the system more natural, it is decorated with artificial firewood or coals specially made for fireplaces of this category. Thus, we can safely conclude that the main consumers of such products are city residents.
What can a decorative hearth be made from?
To answer this question, we collected scattered information, photos and videos published on the Internet by home craftsmen. If you have set a goal to make an artificial fireplace yourself, you will probably find a suitable material from the list:
- cardboard boxes (for example, from a TV) or corrugated cardboard sheets used as packaging;
- Chipboard, regular plywood and OSB, fiberboard;
- plasterboard sheets (GKL), fixed to a frame made of wood or galvanized steel profiles;
- facing brick.
This is how simple crafts made from corrugated cardboard look. The easiest and fastest way to make a fireplace portal is from a box from a TV or other household appliances. The fake hearths shown in the photo are of little use for many years of use, but they are easily installed in the right place. As a rule, a cardboard fireplace serves as a decoration for the New Year and other holidays, after which it is put away in the pantry.
Stationary models of false fireplaces that can last for many years are made from other materials, including polystyrene foam. They are decorated in accordance with the interior of the apartment and in various ways they create an imitation of fire or are furnished with candles. We suggest considering the production of each option separately.
Advice. Whatever manufacturing method you choose, first determine the location for the artificial hearth and sketch out a drawing with dimensions by hand. This will simplify the calculation of the amount of materials and the selection of design style.
How and in what is the best way to store it?
Fireplace wood material is best stored in a dry place, and artificial ceramic models are best stored in a prominent place as interior decoration. Today there is a colossal number of special “storages” that will remove the unaesthetic appearance of ordinary firewood away from the eyes. Online stores sell special holders, drawers, baskets and even cabinets in various sizes and colors. Thanks to such designs, you will not spoil the interior of the bedroom, living room or even basement, and the firewood will retain its properties.

Fireplace: imitation of flames using Christmas tree garlands
Another fairly common way to create an imitation of fire. Here I will tell you how to make an imitation of a wood-burning hearth.
We will need:
- Branches of the right size
- Lace (can be not new, cut from old clothes)
- Aluminium foil
- Glue
- Several stones
- Christmas tree electric garland in yellow, orange or red colors.
We wrap branches without gaps in foil. This is necessary so that the lace does not subsequently stick to the branches.
Carefully coat the lace with glue and wrap it around the prepared branches in foil. Leave until completely dry (about a day).
Carefully cut the lace case along the branch and remove the blanks.
We lay out a circle of stones at the location where the hearth is installed. We place the garland in the middle, leaving the cord and plug outside.
We install our “lace” firewood into something like a fire. You can add a few stones for the composition. Our hearth is ready. We plug the garland into a socket and admire our imitation.
Tip : the flame will look more natural if the garland flickers.
The final stage is securing the structure
An imitation flame for a fireplace should not only look as natural as possible, but also be additionally secured. To do this, we use several scraps of pre-prepared fabric. For strengthening, it is best to use white silk, since throughout its structure and color, it fits harmoniously into the overall picture of the dummy and conveys all light effects well.
Tip: You need to cut out 4 or more triangular-shaped elements from the fabric; it is advisable to make them slightly asymmetrical in order to achieve maximum resemblance to a real flame.
The shreds need to be secured next to the fan, so when it operates, they will perform rhythmic vibrations.
This completes the imitation of fire in a false fireplace. In order to reproduce this effect, you simply need to connect the fan to the network. The advantages of this visualization are guaranteed safety, high realism and minimal production time.
How to light a fireplace with glass?
A glass fireplace will retain its transparency and neat appearance if it uses a special type of firewood, even better decorative (models with lighting, ceramic products, etc.).
It's always nice to watch the dance of fire through huge glasses with wide viewing angles, in which soot does not appear immediately. The cleanliness and transparency of the glass surface is influenced by the quality of the fuel you choose.
Experts recommend paying attention to such types of soft wood as aspen and alder. Hardwoods in the form of oak and beech logs are also suitable. They will literally “smoke” the soot from the fireplace.
Buy firewood with a moisture content of less than 20%. Such dry material naturally exhibits an even flame, which means it reduces the risk of heavy smoke and soot formation. Conifers placed in the firebox, which spark, crackle and clog not only the glass “panorama”, but also the chimney itself due to its resin content, would not be the best solution.

The aroma of a burning fireplace
Visualization of the burning flames is the main, most labor-intensive and expensive part of the construction of a false fireplace. But the feeling of warmth and comfort will be incomplete without the specific smell of burning wood.
Achieving this effect is not difficult. You can choose a suitable option from oriental incense. There is a chance to get a more realistic smell from the combustion of thin splinters, but in this case you need to take care of fire safety.
If you have set yourself the goal of getting the most realistic artificial fireplace for yourself, then it is better to hide the combustion chamber under the outer panel of the fireplace in a closed niche. It must be equipped with forced ventilation based on a computer fan with the odor escaping into the hearth of the fireplace.

Placement of firewood
Decorating your fireplace, as we have already said, can be done in completely different ways. You can place firewood, coals, stones and even candles in it. If you choose the option with logs, you can stack them in different ways, for example, in even rows, along the walls or burner, in a house, or in a chaotic manner. Additionally, stones, candles, and other decorative materials will help decorate the fireplace.
A small firewood rack placed next to the fireplace will also become part of the entire interior. The design of the firewood rack should be chosen to suit the overall interior of the room. By loading real firewood into the firewood rack, you will emphasize the naturalness of the entire system.
When decorating your fireplace in your home, you should remember that this piece of furniture is mostly decorative, and to a lesser extent has some practical value. Therefore, to make your main accent look decent, you need to put some effort into its design.
Fireplace portal made of wood and plywood
In this case, you will need the following lumber:
- wooden beam with a section of 4 x 4 cm - on the main (corner) posts of the frame;
- the same, size 4 x 2 cm - for jumpers;
- solid wood tabletop or laminated chipboard - on the top shelf;
- any cheap plywood - for sheathing;
- suitable finishing material - artificial stone, plastic panels, polyurethane moldings, tiles and so on.
The tools used are also available - a hacksaw, a drill, measuring devices. For fastening, use regular black self-tapping screws and, if necessary, perforated steel corners and strips. If you plan to paint the false fireplace, purchase an acrylic composition of the desired color.
Wooden frame assembled with mantelpiece
Next, proceed to manufacturing the portal, following the individual drawing and step-by-step instructions:
- Measure and cut the bars to size. At the same time, take into account the thickness of the plywood, otherwise the product will turn out larger than you expected.
- Assemble the frame of the product by twisting the beams with self-tapping screws and maintaining 90° angles between the posts and horizontal elements. Make an extended base at the bottom, and immediately attach the racks on top to a wide board that acts as a shelf.
- Install stiffeners on the sides in the form of jumpers or jibs. Form the arch of the portal by attaching a horizontal beam at its top point.
- Attach the frame to the wall or floor in the chosen location and cover it with plywood, including the niche. If you want to get an arched vault, cut out the corresponding rounding on the front sheet.
Finishing with plywood sheets
Important point. In the case when you need to install an electric firebox with an imitation flame inside an artificial fireplace, the dimensions of the opening must correspond to its dimensions. Another nuance: at the back between the wall and the firebox body, be sure to maintain a distance of at least 5 cm.
The simplest and most inexpensive cladding option is to cover the gaps between the sheets of plywood with putty, clean it with sandpaper, and then paint it. Another cheap way is finishing with PVC panels that imitate brick, as shown in the photo. How to properly attach this material is described in the corresponding article.
The mantel should be sanded and varnished if it is made of solid wood. All that remains is to design the portal to create the impression of combustion in a pseudo-fuel tank. The assembly process is briefly and clearly shown in the video:
Why put stones inside a biofireplace?
The first thing that comes to mind when you see a stylish glass fireplace with white stones laid on a black background is really beautiful. For example, Magnifique biofireplace with basalt stones.
Without a small rock garden of its own made of round polished pebbles, the glass body of the bio-fireplace looks like an abandoned aquarium put up for sale by fish. Somehow everything is uncomfortable and too technical.
It’s not just a matter of design; ceramic stones for a biofireplace play a special role in organizing and stabilizing the operation of the fireplace burner. Properly selected stones increase the effectiveness of a biofireplace:
- A hot alcohol flame, burning evenly inside the glass case, rises upward with streams of heated air. Most of the heat from the burnt alcohol evaporates to the ceiling, so the laid stones heat up and radiate heat like brickwork;
- After the bio-fireplace is turned off, the pebbles continue to emit heat for some time, drying and warming the surrounding space. If necessary, after thoroughly heating the stones, you can reduce the flame of the bio-fireplace to a minimum, as a result, most of the heat from the burnt alcohol will be re-radiated in the form of heat waves;
- If you are not greedy and use special ceramic firewood for a bio-fireplace instead of stone, you can dramatically reduce the amount of combustion product deposits on glass and surrounding furniture. They remain on the ceramic surface of the stones.
For your information! Despite its external purity and environmental friendliness, alcohol in bio-fireplaces or alcohol lamps never burns completely; a small amount of unburned acids, aldehydes, and mixture stabilizers always remains in the alcohol flame.
If you fill the fireplace with regular alcohol and after burning for an hour and a half, run your hand along the inner surface of the cooled glass, you can feel with your fingers a small oily residue left from the combustion of the alcohol. This is what the surface of the stones collects. If the burner is configured correctly, then most of the plaque, upon contact with hot stones, breaks down into lighter components and burns almost to water and carbon dioxide.
Branded fuel for biofireplaces from leading manufacturers always contains a small amount of liquid paraffin hydrocarbons. They provide higher calorie content and allow stones to be heated to a temperature of 500-600°C. Some hydrocarbons do not burn in the flame due to lack of air or for any other reason. In this case, ceramic firewood plays the role of an additional filter. The stone scattering in a bio-fireplace acts like bricks in a chimney - it collects on its surface all the unburnt microparticles of soot and ash.
True, pebbles or ceramic firewood must have a specific microporous structure, like a brick surface. About once every six months, the stones need to be changed or calcined until red on a gas burner. A whitish coating forms on the surface of the stone, indicating that some of the contaminants have burned out.
TV as a fireplace
TV in the fireplace Another simple method for creating artificial fire in the fireplace is to use a flat-panel LCD TV. But this method will be very expensive, since such equipment is not cheap. There are special TVs designed to be built into decorative fireplaces. They contain a recording of fire, which is played in the hearth of the fireplace.
Sometimes the TV can be supplemented with a special optical system, which consists of light filters. With its help, the image of the flame will become more expressive and voluminous. In addition to this optical system, a system of mirrors can be used. They are located in the corners of the hearth, thereby making the image more voluminous. In rare cases, you can also use holographic installations. But this is a very unprofitable method.
Original approach
Modern fireplaces are created using different technologies; there are systems where there is no fire at all in the firebox. Fire can be simulated using electrical devices; in such devices it usually flickers or smolders. A 3D projection of fire can be created with the participation of optical instruments and light. Regardless of the method of obtaining artificial fire, it is very similar to real, fascinating and eye-catching.
Modern electric fireplaces are less a heating device that complements central heating, and more a decorative accessory that plays a major role in the interior of the room. You can buy any option you like, create an imitation of fire in it and enjoy it during the long evenings.
The simplest options create fire through lighting. Decorative firewood for fireplaces with lighting is also made from ceramics, but recently quite high-quality plastic options have appeared. Plastic makes it possible to reduce the cost of the production process of decorative items, and therefore make them accessible to a wider range of consumers. At the same time, the visual side of such firewood is all right, since plastic is an even more elastic and easy-to-work material.
General view of the electric fireplace firebox
The burning effect in electric fireplaces is created by illuminating plastic parts, which creates the feeling that the coals in the firebox are red-hot and tongues of flame are playing on them. This feeling is enhanced by a slight shimmer, which is created in many modern models.
Good to know: Firewood holders for fireplaces and stoves, solutions for storing firewood at home
One of the most advanced electric fireplaces are devices where the fire is made in the form of a 3D model. The necessary surroundings are drawn on the screen of the electric fireplace: logs, coals, fire, which is complemented by sound. Despite the fact that the system creates a completely artificial fire, the effect of the necessary atmosphere is achieved by the overall background and appearance. In some cases, it is permissible to put natural firewood into the improvised firebox of such electric fireplaces in order to create an even more realistic picture.
Since ancient times, false fireplaces have been built into the interior, designed to complement its appearance. Remember the popular fairy tale about Pinocchio, in whose house there was a painted hearth.
Modern false fireplaces are a more bulky structure, inside of which there is a photo wallpaper with a burning fire or a suitable picture. At the same time, by placing dummy firewood or natural wood in the firebox, you can achieve a more realistic look.
Comprehensive design of the fireplace insert
Very often, in such systems, candles are used in conjunction with artificial firewood, the fire of which is very real. Candles are a great decorative item, but they are not the safest. If you plan to place them in your false fireplace from time to time, consider fire safety measures: create a place for wax to drain, protect flammable materials from real fire.
False fireplace made of foam plastic
Perhaps one of the simplest options for creating a decorative fireplace is to use foam plastic as a base. This makes the process much easier, so this master class is suitable even for beginners.
Necessary materials:
- Styrofoam;
- acrylic primer;
- PVA glue;
- scissors;
- brush;
- acrylic lacquer;
- masking tape;
- toothpicks;
- golden acrylic paint;
- braid for decoration;
- knife;
- putty knife;
- centimeter;
- decor
We cut out four rectangular pieces from polystyrene foam. These will be the front and back walls, as well as the side parts. Since the foam is quite poorly fixed with glue, we additionally use toothpicks.
We connect the side parts with the walls.
Apply a thin layer of acrylic primer to the joints and leave until dry.
On the inside we make markings where the firebox should be. Carefully cut it out using a sharp knife.
If necessary, additionally secure the parts with toothpicks.
We also fix the parts along the top and bottom edges with masking tape.
Apply primer to the frame and leave until dry. We dip the braid for decoration in glue and attach it along the cut for the firebox.
Using light movements, apply golden paint to the braid. We glue decor in the form of flowers in the corners.
We cut out another blank from foam plastic. We attach it to the top of the fireplace, like a shelf. We cover the sides of the workpiece with gold paint.
Let's start decorating. If desired, glue various snowflakes and braid. You can also decoupage the sides of the false fireplace. Cover the entire surface with acrylic varnish and leave to dry.
You can put a decorative candlestick or just a few candles in the inside. It looks very beautiful and unusual.
Available options
In specialized stores you can find artificial firewood made from a variety of materials. Most often, plastic, ceramics, and stone are used to produce such decorative accessories. For connoisseurs of natural things, ordinary logs treated with special compounds are offered.
Natural firewood. Natural firewood is actively used to decorate fireplaces and the space next to them. They look very authentic; the subconscious mind does not reject the visual picture. In addition, the trend of environmental friendliness has been in fashion for a long time and is unlikely to be replaced by any other direction in the near future. Firewood can be chopped into small dies, you can use small logs or whole logs.
Decorating the fireplace and the entire interior with natural wood
When lighting an eco-fireplace, natural wood is, of course, removed from it, since the system runs on a completely different fuel. However, if you have a false fireplace, you may not need to get logs; the main thing is to be vigilant and take fire safety measures when installing candles.
Please note that if you decide to bring real firewood from the street, make sure that various insects, bugs or even mold do not migrate to you with it.
To decorate fireplaces in your home using natural wood, you can use various types of wood. For example, for an interior in light colors, birch firewood is perfect, while for a modern, bright and unusual interior, aspen, known for its unusual wood color, would be appropriate.
Good to know: How to split wood manually and mechanically
Ceramic firewood. For modern bio-fireplaces, imitation firewood made from fire-resistant materials is actively used. This dummy wood for the fireplace is loaded directly into the firebox, because it is practically not afraid of the corrupting influence of fire.
Ceramic fireplace accessories
The best option for many modern systems is the use of ceramic objects. Ceramics is a very malleable material, so analogues of firewood are created with details worked out to the smallest detail, which makes them very similar to the original. Currently, ceramics are used to create:
- imitation of whole logs, chocks;
- a replica of wood burnt in a fire;
- decorative coals;
- imitation of twigs, sticks, cones.
If you look at such objects from a certain distance, you may not notice the catch, so well made is the copy. Using artificial coals for the fireplace, firewood, twigs and cones is not only good from a decorative point of view, but also from a practical point of view, since the ceramics will not catch fire, smoke or spark.
The service life of ceramic objects is very long, but still regular firing of ceramics with real fire will not pass without a trace. Most often, not the highest quality products quickly deteriorate, but good ones last for several years. The market for decorative firewood is quite large, so it contains both high-quality and low-quality options. Normal quality costs some money, and this is something to keep in mind when purchasing.
Stone options. In addition to imitation firewood, modern eco-friendly fireplaces are often decorated with decorative stones and pebbles. The stones are placed directly into the firebox. They can use regular fireplaces, or their substitutes, again made from ceramics. Most often, decoration with stones is used for fireplaces running on biofuel. Real fire passing through stones looks very impressive in such systems. At the same time, the fire itself and the decorative materials do not emit anything into the atmosphere of the room, which means that a chimney is not needed for such a device.
Modern tabletop fireplace with stones
Polyurethane
Polyurethane elements are very convenient for decorating a ready-made false fireplace design. There is also the possibility of the simplest imitation of a firebox, when its contours are marked on the wall using moldings, platbands or semi-columns. It is easiest to build a polyurethane fireplace with your own hands: this work usually takes several hours.
It is difficult to create the appearance of a real fireplace in this way, but due to an interesting play, the portal turns out to be quite impressive. In such cases, they often use a mirror on the back wall of the fireplace, which allows them to visually increase the depth of the “firebox”. To enhance the impression, the wall above the portal is decorated with a wooden shelf, stylized as a fireplace.
Gypsum boards
The most common construction option, after false fireplaces made of polyurethane. Plasterboard sheets are very convenient to cut and process: they are easy to assemble and can be decorated with any finishing material without any problems. GKL boards allow you to create quite complex volumetric structures.
Types of devices for chopping wood
All wood splitters can be divided into two types:
Devices for home use , which are used only for splitting firewood.
Professional machines with which you can process entire logs. Such devices, unlike home ones, are larger, more powerful and expensive.
In turn, wood splitters for home use differ in the principle of operation and the type of their power source.
Manual device - cleaver
A woodcutter's tool is designed for chopping wood. For a cleaver to serve for a long time, it must be forged and well-hardened.
The best and most comfortable handle for a tool is a wooden one. A cleaver equipped with a metal and plastic handle is more difficult to work with. With an incorrectly directed blow, such a handle may even burst.
The weight of the cleaver and the length of the handle must be selected individually. Since the device will have to be waved many times, it must be chosen in such a way that you can hold it confidently.
As a “workplace ” where wood will be chopped using a cleaver, it is recommended to choose the widest and largest deck. It needs to be placed on a level place, around which there should be nothing that could be touched when swinging the wood splitter. And, of course, when cutting wood it is imperative to follow safety precautions.
Mechanical wood splitters
The fairly large mass of the cleavers is driven by levers, which greatly facilitates the process of splitting logs. The load on the woodcutter is reduced due to the spring mechanism, which facilitates control and compensates for the severity of the blow.
With the help of such devices, it is most often possible to split logs of various lengths . To do this, you need to adjust the position of the spring by changing the distance from it to the working body.
Having fixed the log, with one hand you need to lift the wood splitter up and lower it onto the log. The cleaver will cut the prepared workpiece, and the spring will return the mechanism to its original position. The effort required during such work is very small, therefore, productivity increases.
Devices can have different types and principles of operation. Some people divide the log into only two parts at first, and some into several at once. In households you can find factory-made mechanical cleavers and their hand-made analogues.
Hydraulic cleaver
This device for chopping wood is designed according to the principle of the previous one, however, the force in it is created by a hydraulic jack. The principle of its operation is the pressure pumped through the liquid, which is transmitted to the working piston that exerts pressure on the log. The mechanism of operation of such a device can be seen more clearly in the video clip.
Hydraulic splitter design:
- working piston;
- multi-blade cutting tool;
- guides, which are used to ensure linear movement of the workpiece along the bed;
- the frame on which the cutting tool is mounted and along which the piston moves.
The bed in this design must be made of a sufficiently thick steel channel.
Hydraulic wood splitters can be of different configurations and different capacities . Their selection in stores is quite large.
Decorative fireplace with your own efforts
There is nothing difficult in making a false fireplace with your own hands. In short, the entire workflow is divided into several simple steps:
- Come up with a drawing of the finished structure and choose its location
- Build a frame from a metal profile
- Cover with plywood, plasterboard or chipboard
- Perform final finishing
