Cladding a corner fireplace with decorative rocks.
The natural fire in the fireplace bewitches, relaxes and calms people from millennium to millennium. At times, bright, sometimes calm flames encourage a philosophical and romantic mood, allowing people to abandon constant problems, plunging people into a state of nirvana. True, modern apartments do not always allow the installation of a traditional classic fireplace, then a corner fireplace can be a way out, and the images below only confirm this.
Why do you need a fireplace in your home?
It would seem that in our time, when you don’t have to waste time and effort on chopping wood, heating the fireplace and removing ash, many owners of country houses (and not only) strive to have a fireplace in their home.

First of all, an open live fire allows you to experience an indescribable feeling of calm and tranquility. For residents of private houses, there will be no particular problem in installing a corner stove - searching for a professional or doing it yourself, determining the location and some time to implement your plan. It’s more difficult for residents of most high-rise buildings; they don’t have a live fire in such a fireplace, both literally and figuratively, because installing such a product in almost all apartments is prohibited. But you will be able to buy a successful imitation; an electric stylized fireplace will help with this. Its angular location will allow you to get the desired opportunity to contemplate the flames without losing useful space.
Previously, when individual heating systems had not yet been installed, the fireplace served not only as a source of pleasant sensations, but as a completely complete and autonomous source of heat. Sometimes food was cooked and heated in it. Modern ones have not been seen for such purposes, although on a cool autumn day in a dacha or country house it is quite possible to turn a wood-burning fireplace into a source of heat.
Many owners of apartments, country houses and dachas dream of becoming the owner of a fireplace in which the fire crackles cheerfully.
The fireplace almost always becomes the center of any room in which it is located.

Several useful recommendations that will help you best “fit” a corner fireplace into the interior of the room.
When choosing a corner model, first of all, pay attention to its dimensions. It is clear that decent-sized projects will look good in a spacious living room, but for a small room some compact type will be better suited. An imitation fireplace will fit perfectly into a room of any size.

The shape of the structure also matters. In a house with a modern interior - with strict, highly functional furniture and a pronounced tendency towards geometricity and laconicism - it is better to install the same strict and clear small fireplace in neutral colors. However, it can also be glass. But if the room is decorated in a decorative style - for example, in Provence or country style, then it needs an option that is suitable in style - it can even be artificial, perhaps white or brick.

Be sure to pay attention to how functional the corner fireplace is. Will it be possible to use it for its intended purpose - as a heating device, or is it artificial and has a purely applied, decorative purpose.
Decorating the appearance of a fireplace for country houses is also very important. Think about how harmoniously the chosen option - closed, open or imitation - will fit into the existing interior of the living room.
White corner fireplace in the living room
If you want to equip a corner model with a living room in an apartment, and not in a private house, then in this case only electric design options equipped with special protective glass are suitable. Although this option “eats up” a lot of electricity, on cold winter evenings you can warm up next to it, just like next to a real flame. A corner false fireplace will also work in this case, however, it will not provide heat.
White corner fireplace in a gray living room
A corner type of fireplace - large or small - can be located both on the external wall of the house and on the internal one. But if you are inclined to place it on an internal wall, then think in advance where the chimney will go - the design of some houses does not allow the chimney to be installed anywhere.
When installing a fireplace on an external wall, permission from the relevant authorities will be required in order to bring the chimney outside. When installing a corner fireplace - both classic and non-standard - be sure to take into account all fire safety rules. Cladding that protects the walls from sparks will be required.

Peculiarities
A corner fireplace is an excellent solution for owners of small living rooms. It gives both a large cottage and a small country house comfort, warmth and coziness, and also creates a unique interior.
A corner fireplace has a number of undeniable advantages:
- compact dimensions: a corner fireplace will ideally fill an empty corner in the room;
- reliable source of heat: a corner fireplace has optimal heat dissipation, which is many times greater than conventional stoves or electric heaters;
- You can install a corner fireplace not only in the living room, but also in the bedroom;
- high level of security;
- quietly saves usable space and does not take up much space;
- a large assortment and many finishing options for various rooms;
- additionally heats adjacent rooms, since the design uses two walls;
- hides wall flaws and design flaws in the room;
- wide visibility of the fire, which allows you to look at the flame from anywhere in the room.
The fireplace design consists of several parts.
- Firebox. It can be open or closed. The type of firebox does not affect heat transfer, but increases fire safety in the room. For a closed firebox, additional care must be taken to purchase durable, heat-resistant tempered glass or ceramics. If you plan to equip an open firebox, you should lay brick or metal tiles in front of the fireplace: random sparks from the fire will not develop into a flame, which will protect your home from fire.
- Ash pit. Necessary for collecting large amounts of ash that is formed after the combustion of logs. The ash pan is a small chamber and is located directly under the firebox. If there is excessive clogging through the ash pan, air stops flowing into the firebox and the fire goes out.
- Grate. Serves as an insulating layer on which fuel for the fireplace is burned.
- Portal. This is the design of the fireplace itself, in other words, the body.
- Chimney. It is made of steel or brick, its height must be at least 5 meters.
Fire safety measures when laying a corner fireplace
- A separate base must be built for a brick fireplace. It is better to separate the foundation from the main one at the construction stage, but if the fireplace project is being implemented in a house that is already in use, then you will have to remove part of the floor covering, go deep into the ground and build a separate foundation.
The foundation is built separately
The weight of a brick fireplace exceeds 1 ton, and if during the shrinkage process the main foundation of the house sags, this should not affect the design of the fireplace. Otherwise, it may become deformed and gas will enter the room.
- All interfloor ceilings through which the chimney pipe will be discharged must be insulated with asbestos material. In the same way we insulate the walls that are located next to the fireplace.
- If the fireplace is being built in a house with wooden walls, then between the adjoining wall you need to lay a metal sheet, the size of which exceeds the dimensions of the fireplace by 20-25 cm on each side.
- When building a fireplace with an open firebox, it is necessary to lay brick or ceramic tiles in front of the fireplace so that random sparks and intense flames do not cause a fire.
Photo corner high-tech fireplace
As you can see, there are so many corner fireplaces that are not made in a private house or apartment. They are built from brick, marble, onyx or ordinary natural stone, which is at hand, made from gypsum cardboard or generally from plywood and stucco, if we are talking about false stones. This can be either a real corner fireplace in the living room, or an electric fireplace, or even a decorative one, in which candles are burned instead of firewood and a fire, or a photograph of a flame is used. This corner fireplace can be covered with plaster or finished with facing stone or tiles. And also don’t forget to choose the right fireplace to match the interior style of your living room, since you can use a regular fireplace for a classic or English style, but for high-tech, modern or minimalism - something more modern.

Design and placement
Corner fireplaces come in a variety of shapes, different models and finishing materials. Today they are installed in private homes and residential premises. They are technologically advanced and compact, which means they take up little space, making them an ideal option for living rooms.
Before starting work, it is better to decide on the style of the overall interior of the room, regardless of whether it is finished or just under construction. After all, adding a structure such as a fireplace is a great opportunity to completely change the design.
Therefore, in such a situation, the ideal option would be to plan the interior with a ready-made corner fireplace in the living room of a city apartment, as in the photo:
After choosing the place where the corner fireplace will be placed, its installation must be coordinated with the relevant authorities. After this, you can look for a master who can professionally turn your idea into reality.
Zoning
Designers do not advise giving in to fashion trends and copying design ideas without taking into account dimensions, location and other nuances. Before planning and arranging furniture, every detail is thought through.
There are several simple rules that experts advise you to follow:
- Let the room have natural light. To do this, remove excess walls (except for load-bearing ones).
- If the rooms in the apartment are small (12 sq. m or 16 sq. m), the layout of the kitchen combined with the dining room will be the right solution.
- If the ventilation system is not designed correctly, the smell of food will spread throughout the apartment.
Corner fireplace and its features
This type of installation is varied, not only in models, but also in shape and size. The finishing of such fireplaces can be any. The versatility of this type of structure allows them to be placed both in country houses and in apartments of any size. Such fireplaces take up little space and fit organically into the composition of different styles. To install such a device in your apartment, you must first decide on a location, take permission (if necessary) and choose a specialist for installation.
There are several main types of corner structures.
- Asymmetrical. They do an excellent job of zoning a room, which eliminates the need to install partitions and walls. The firebox can be closed or open.
- Symmetric. The walls of this structure mirror each other and are completely identical. They are bulky and take up more space. This type should be considered as the central element of the composition in the design of the living room and should not be emphasized.
- Brick. This is a classic option that creates an indescribable atmosphere of coziness, comfort, and warmth. But they are very difficult to install and require additional care.
- Decorative. This is a kind of false structure that is not used for its intended purpose, it simply decorates the interior. The only practical use is lighting.
Corner fireplace installations have the following advantages:
- The efficiency is much higher, since the walls reflect heat;
- some heat is transferred to adjacent rooms;
- variety of design compositions;
- style versatility;
- compactness;
- creating a cozy atmosphere in the living room.
The following nuances should be taken into account:
- open structures are not very powerful;
- closed ones can be the main device for heat in the house, but in an apartment they are more likely a decorative or backup element.
It is very important to choose a model according to the type of fuel used, especially if we are talking about a city apartment.
- Wood-burning. Such models are not suitable for apartments, but in a private house they are actively used. Quite budget friendly.
- Gas. They are also not too expensive, but too complicated to install; a good ventilation system and chimney are required. Requires permissions, you won’t be able to connect it yourself.
- Biofireplaces. One of the best options for an apartment, since there is no need for a chimney. Eco-fuel is used as fuel, installation is as simple as possible. Fits perfectly into a modern interior.
- Electrical. In fact, it is a simulated look, but very effective, safe and easy to install. The illusion of fire and burning wood is reproduced on the screen. A chimney, of course, is not required. From an environmental point of view, it is safe, you can install it yourself without obtaining permits. There is also a minus - the cost of electricity is quite significant with frequent use.

Design and benefits
Sitting area near the elegantly designed plastered corner fireplace
By design, corner fireplaces can be symmetrical or asymmetrical. The first type is based on symmetry; such a fireplace in the living room requires a certain placement of decorative components and even furniture inside the room. The central component of the interior will be the fireplace. A corner symmetrical fireplace will perfectly warm the room.
Beautiful living room in Mediterranean style
Asymmetrical ones are most often one of the zoning elements in the interior. With their help, you will be able to stylishly and unusually separate one zone in the room from another. Of course, for its organic appearance, the room itself needs to be large enough.

A fireplace can create an atmosphere of coziness and comfort in your home
The main advantage of corner fireplaces is saving living space, because they take up usually little-used space in the corner of the room. Thanks to this, a corner fireplace can fit perfectly into the interior of not only a spacious living room or hall, but also a small bedroom or office. In addition, in a small (up to 20 sq. m.) room, an electric fireplace (with a power of 2 kW) can act as an additional (especially in the off-season) heat source. Another feature of a corner fireplace is a beautiful view of the flame from anywhere in the room.
Corner fireplaces offer a stylistic variety from pretentious Empire style to the straightforward severity of Art Nouveau, an opportunity, even in a small area, to recreate the atmosphere and style of a classic fireplace room, in which it is so pleasant to relax, retire with a book or have a romantic dinner.

- Useful saving of living space.
- Creating coziness and a comfortable microclimate.
- Possibility of spending romantic evenings by the fireplace.

Decorating with a corner model will help hide design flaws in houses and poor-quality finishing of buildings. An uneven wall and protruding communications in the hall or living room can also be hidden by a decorative chimney pipe. A white fireplace can be a stylish element of the interior, while a glass fireplace can give the room weightlessness and fit harmoniously into the high-tech style.

An obvious plus is space saving, since a corner wall-mounted fireplace occupies an empty, low-functional corner, leaving much more “advantageous” and easily accessible areas of the room free. Thanks to this space-saving, ergonomic design, corner models can fit even into a small room. And their elegant and stylish cladding will fit perfectly into the interior of any cottage.

Design
Before installing a fireplace, you need to decide on the design.
In this case, it is necessary to take into account:
- geometric dimensions;
- facade;
- shape;
- type;
- functional indicators;
- aesthetic parameters.
Designers do not recommend placing the emphasis in the room directly on the fireplace - this will deprive the interior of integrity and harmony. Although, undoubtedly, the fireplace will become the main element in any room. Even an imitation fireplace makes a simple room more cozy and attractive. And to give the interior weightlessness and harmony, choose a glass fireplace in light shades.
And the mantelpiece can be decorated with figurines, vases of flowers, photographs or beautiful candles. There is also room for precious antique watches and family heirlooms.
Some fireplace designs can be upgraded by adding a cooktop or even an oven. Then you can cook delicious, smoky dishes without leaving home. It is more appropriate to place such a fireplace in the dining room or kitchen-living room.
Choosing an installation location
When placing a fireplace near the external walls, some heat loss occurs, because of this, experts advise making the room warmer, purchasing Euro-windows, insulating the room, especially on the north side, and generally protecting the home from temperature changes.
Important! The fireplace should not be located near stairs or in corridors, as safety issues may arise.
If possible, it is better to arrange furniture elements so that, while in the room, you can enjoy the fire. For this, for example, parallel placement is often used, when armchairs are placed opposite the sofa, and a small coffee table between them.
Furniture should be purchased in warm colors in order to further emphasize the pleasant atmosphere of the room.
Quite often, armchairs with a pouf or stylish rocking chairs are placed next to the fireplace for comfortable relaxation.
Important! Placing a TV above a fireplace violates safety regulations.
With a corner fireplace in the living room interior, for example, the chair can be placed sideways to it, and the fire will not interfere with watching TV.
The shelf above the fireplace can be decorated with various cute trinkets, figurines or decorative vases. Antique unusual watches, forged elements and family heirlooms are suitable. Family photos also look great on such a shelf.

Asymmetrical fireplaces

Asymmetrical corner fireplaces are a change in ideas about traditional fireplaces; their designs can be very diverse. They are elegant and unusual, perfect for small spaces. Any designer will say that a modern asymmetrical fireplace will fit best into a modern interior, and the chimney can be easily hidden in the wall cladding. This type of fireplace perfectly zones the space.
Stylish loft living room with corner fireplace
As for its structure, it is always possible to organically place it in a corner - there are different designs:
- With fireplace inserts without walls or with them.
- With a cap that rests on a column made of brick or stone.
Advice! If you want to add variety to the design of the room with the help of an asymmetrical fireplace, then choose non-standard shapes and finishes.
Today, fireplaces have become especially popular to complement the interior of ultra-modern living rooms.
It also looks very attractive in country houses, because there it is possible to combine natural materials and elements: wood, stone, fire.
Advantages of corner structures
It is worth noting all the important advantages:

Style
A corner fireplace can harmoniously fit into any interior, regardless of style. You can use both natural and artificial finishing materials. The most popular: brick, plasterboard and decorative plaster. The main thing is that the individual elements of the fireplace do not stand out from the overall style of the interior.
In the classic English style, the fireplace is made of red brick. Such designs look reliable, elegant and discreet. They are able to create a comfortable and cozy atmosphere. But it is also important to consider that a brick fireplace only looks appropriate in a large room. In addition, installing it will require a lot of effort and finance.
Also, for a classic style, a wooden fireplace would be an excellent option, especially if the entire interior is designed in a traditional spirit.
Country and Provence styles are perfect for a living room with a fireplace. Here, when decorating a fireplace, a combination of natural materials is appropriate: stone and wood.
In modern styles, designers often give preference to fireplaces with decorative trim - they look more light. The living room can be decorated with warm or cool colors. For furniture, designers advise choosing calm, warm shades: they will perfectly highlight and complement the overall atmosphere of the room.
Types and properties
Depending on the type of fuel used, fireplaces are divided into:
- gas. They provide warmth that can be felt, and there is no soot. Cons – difficult to connect in an apartment, permission for installation is required;
- electric fireplaces. Convenient and easy to use, have a low cost, and when installing the structure you do not need to obtain permission;
- biofireplaces. Eco-friendly, ideal for decoration, but the cost of fuel (alcohol) is too high and unsafe;
- wood-burning An excellent option for private houses, since installation in an apartment poses difficulties.
The fireplace is also called the soul of the living room due to the fact that when an open fire burns in it, in addition to warmth, it can create a cozy atmosphere at home. Thanks to this, more and more owners are thinking about installing an elegant fireplace in the living room.
The corner fireplace in the interior is especially popular. It fits perfectly into the design if its placement is well thought out.
In addition, this option has advantages compared to frontal options:
- heats all adjacent rooms at the same time;
- has increased efficiency due to heat reflection from the walls;
- saves space due to angular placement and compactness;
- There are endless possibilities for realizing design ideas.

- compactness;
- full view of the flame;
- heating the room;
- increased security;
- originality;
- variety of design;
- efficiency.
Remember! To keep the house as warm as possible, you should use other heating sources in addition to the fireplace.
Materials
Today there are many models made of different materials on the market - the choice depends on personal preferences and the operating characteristics of the device.
For lining the firebox of a wood-burning fireplace, cast iron, ceramics, fireclay or vermiculite are used. These are reliable and durable materials that have proven themselves. Marble, stone, metal and other materials are used for cladding the fireplace. There are a lot of design options, so when choosing a wood-burning stove model, you need to take into account many nuances - where it will be located, how often it will be used, the volume of the room, etc.

Portals to fireplaces are also made from a variety of materials. There are models made of stone, both real and stylized, wood or metal, and you can also find combined specimens. There are a lot of options for implementation, the main thing is that the fireplace fits harmoniously into the overall style of the interior.

Styles
There are many current trends and design ideas. The kitchen-living room in a modern style looks simple and minimalistic.
At the same time, it is not necessary to strictly adhere to any style; you can take its main idea as a basis and cleverly play with it with accessories and other details.
Where to install the fireplace?
The location can be chosen according to your wishes, but you need to take into account some features of the choice:
- It can be installed on both external and internal walls.
- It is important to determine where the chimney exits, which is why interior walls can be problematic for installing a fireplace.
- Placement on an external wall requires permitting documentation from the relevant authorities to lead the chimney to the street.
- When installing a pipe along the walls of a house built of wood, take care of fire safety measures.

Preparation for installation and installation
Before installation begins, you need to decide what masonry scheme will be used, the material (corner false fireplaces are widespread), the order and the provided drawings. The fireplace can have very different sizes. Everything will depend on the total area of the room. For your home, it is optimal to select natural materials that have high heat capacity.
Before starting work, a number of related activities must be carried out. A corner fireplace in the living room interior should also perform a heating function, which it does.
First of all, you need to determine the dimensions of the fireplace insert. The most commonly used proportion is 3:2; for small fireplaces this is the best option.
The next step is to determine the depth of the firebox. It should be related to the overall height of the firebox opening. The optimal ratio is 3:2 or 1:2. Correct measurements are very important, since an incorrectly selected firebox will not be able to heat the entire area. A corner fireplace made of brick should be installed based on the presented proportions.
If the draft is too strong, the room may even smoke. Next, a hole for smoke exhaust is selected. In this case, it is also necessary to select the optimal balance and proceed from the size of the firebox gap. Many experienced stove makers insist that the combustion part should be 10-15 times larger than the smoke hole. To increase the heat transfer of the house, the rear wall of the firebox is tilted forward at a slight angle.
The structure has a special smoke collector. A pass is installed between it and the inclined surface, which will prevent sparks from entering from the pipe.
Any corner fireplace begins to be installed from the first row. It is important to follow the appropriate masonry system inherent in a particular type of brick. It is necessary to determine the dimensions of the future product and lay the potential version. A corner fireplace in the interior can be installed in several stages.
After this, a plan is created and material is selected. It is necessary to calculate the approximate amount of bricks, but at the same time predict in advance possible defects in production.
A corner fireplace in the interior can be made independently within a short period of time. The most expensive part is drawing up a plan for the future product. For individual parts, you can use different types of bricks, each of which has its own specific properties.

The corner fireplace plays a significant role in the interior. It can enhance the overall functionality of a room and provide warmth.
With your own hands
It is quite possible to make a corner fireplace for your home with your own hands, but to do this you need to receive minimal theoretical training and know what tools and materials will be needed. Let's start with theory - calculations and drawings.
Corner fireplace in country style in the interior of a country house living room
Before creating a drawing, you need to calculate what size the furnace room should be for a particular room. This is done according to the following formula: the size of the furnace is 1/50 of the volume of the room. Its depth will be in the ratio 1:2 or 2:3, it is not worth going deeper, as the heat transfer will deteriorate, it is simply not possible to be less, since smoke is likely.
Advice! Do not count on a high efficiency: for fireplaces of any design it does not exceed 30%. If your goal is to provide heating for a country house or cottage, then you should pay attention to ready-made corner fireplaces, for example, “Bavaria”.
Modern technologies allow you to install a fireplace even in an apartment
When choosing a fireplace for our interior, you need to decide for yourself for what purpose you need it
Calculating the cross-section of the chimney depends on the size of your firebox; the diameter of the duct should be 10 times smaller; a round pipe with a cross-section of at least 10 cm would be an excellent option.
Styles and design
When carrying out a design project by an experienced specialist, you don’t have to worry about choosing the right design for the portal, but what to do if you decide to install a fireplace with your own hands, and even choose what it will be like - heating or decorative, all that remains is to fit it into the interior? You will find the answer to this question in this section of the article - the main design styles are discussed here.
Classic fireplaces
Timeless classics are always in fashion - this truth is known to everyone. A fireplace with a U-shaped portal and an open firebox, made of brick and trimmed with wood, stone, tile or cast iron, can be called classic. In the old days, heating devices were most often installed near the wall, but with the advent of new materials and technologies, more modern fireplaces have appeared that do not need to be installed in a specific place in the house and, moreover, there are options that can be moved around the house without unnecessary hassle.
The classification of classic fireplaces is directly tied to eras and geographic location. For example, the English style is characterized by:
- have a minimum of elaborate decoration;
- made of brick with stone or wood trim;
- the firebox is small, open, with decorative elements;
- the floor is usually also finished with stone or its imitation;
- the color scheme, as a rule, is close to natural: stones of various shades, stained wood, matte black cast iron.
English interior style made of light stone
Classic fireplaces in the Empire, Rococo or Baroque styles can be called more magnificent. Their peculiarity is the abundance of decorative elements. Corner fireplaces in the Empire style are decorated with elements characteristic of the heyday of Roman classical culture: columns and consoles, decor in the form of sculptures of people or mythical animals, wreaths and garlands. A mirror is often included in the decor, adding majesty.
Interior in Empire style
Fireplaces in the Baroque style are usually installed in spacious halls and living rooms - the abundance of decorative elements with ornate shapes, ornaments and colors creates an accent that is too strong for a small room. The Baroque style is characterized by pomp, rich colors and gilding, smooth lines creating a symmetrical pattern. An excellent choice for a richly furnished room decorated in dark colors.
Interior in Baroque style
Rococo is a lighter and airier style; such fireplaces are decorated in light pastel colors. The decor is distinguished by asymmetry and smooth lines; they fit perfectly into bright living rooms with an abundance of windows and light furniture. For decoration in the Rococo and Baroque styles, predominantly natural materials are used.

Art Nouveau fireplaces
This is a modern variation of classic fireplaces that retains the U-shaped portal shape. When finishing in the Art Nouveau style, it is allowed to use any materials: traditional stone and wood, tiles, polyurethane, modern fireproof glass, cast iron elements. The Art Nouveau style features classic lines and ornate decor that are successfully combined with modern finishing materials, making installation easier and more accessible to anyone.

High-tech - the choice of modern people
The desire of modern man for minimization, functionality and conciseness has given rise to a style that has become very popular. High-tech means clear lines, symmetry and technology. The high-tech style is characterized by strict forms, small dimensions, high-tech controls and safety. These include decorative and heating electric fireplaces in a strict metal casing, and gas built-in fireboxes. Shine of metal, glass, maximum automation and no unnecessary elements. This style is often used in office spaces or modern studio apartments.
Laconicism and minimalism - high-tech style
Country style - rustic
Fireplaces in rustic style resemble a Russian stove - a rectangular or arched firebox is framed with brick or stone trim, a firewood box is often located under it, and the sides smoothly turn into shelves. The general front view resembles the letter “D”. To decorate such fireplaces, natural materials or their imitation are used: stone, clinker tiles, metal decor - all these materials go well with the wooden decoration of the house. The top shelf and side shelves made of carved wood are decorated with rustic home utensils. Thanks to this design, the living room takes on a cozy look, stylized as a country house.

Advantages of electric fireplaces for the bedroom
An electric fireplace is good for everyone. It takes up very little space in the room, is absolutely safe for installation in an apartment located on any floor, and does not require complex manipulations or effort at all to operate. A fireplace connected to electricity is the simplest option, guaranteeing peace, relaxation and the desired comfort - which is what you need to relax in a cozy space.
An electric fireplace is similar to a classic wood-burning fireplace; it also has a light flame flowing through it - only artificial. Electric models have many advantages, here are some of them:
- Easy installation. To install a fireplace structure, you just need to choose a place and stock up on a minimum of tools; you also need to purchase a suitable fireplace portal. If a wood-burning fireplace requires a separate foundation, since it is quite massive, then an electric fireplace does not require any foundation - except, perhaps, a decorative one.
- Freedom of territories. In the bedroom, an electric fireplace will not take up much space, taking up the very minimum of usable space.
- High decorative component. Even a simple fireplace can elevate a bedroom and add a special atmosphere to it.
- Easy to use. In order to turn on the fireplace, you do not need to perform complex manipulations with the kindling; just connect the device to the power supply.
- With a power of 1.5-2 kW, such a fireplace is a good source of additional heat, allowing you to warm up and create a favorable atmosphere.
- Mobility. The electric fireplace, being light in weight, can be easily transported from place to place.
- The additional functionality of the device allows you to switch modes and enjoy the pleasant effects that appear in the room.
There are also disadvantages to such models of fireplaces in the bedroom: they consume a lot of electricity and require powerful wiring during installation.
Exterior view of living room interior with fireplace
Placing such an interior element is possible only in a room whose area is at least twenty, or even twenty-five meters. It is important to consider that residents of city apartments can only install corner electric fireplaces in the interior.
Recently, decorative bio-fireplaces that operate on environmentally friendly fuel have become more popular.

A modern fireplace can be decorated with any material you want: both decorative and natural materials are suitable.
As for the style of the apartment itself, you can decorate it in a classic, English or Scandinavian version. It is important that all the details match in style and do not deviate from the overall idea.
The room can be decorated in cold colors if you use the electric option, and if you live in a private house and can afford to install a corner fireplace in the living room, for example, a gas one, then you can give preference to interior decoration not only in cold shades, but also in warm ones . For example, country style would be an excellent option.
With your own hands
If you have sufficient construction skills and understand the operating principles of stoves and other heating equipment, you can build a corner fireplace with your own hands. It’s difficult to say how much you’ll save on materials, but the work will definitely be free, unless, of course, you have to redo anything with the involvement of qualified specialists.
Before you begin installing a fireplace, it is important to draw up a preliminary project in all details and carefully plan all stages of the work. Do not forget to provide good draft, the correct place for the chimney, and the correct location of the fireplace itself. After installing the entire structure, it will be difficult to redo anything, especially if the fireplace is a built-in type.
Materials
Regardless of what type of fireplace you decide to go with, you will need a lot of materials to make it. First of all, you should take care of thorough waterproofing, which can be roofing felt or polyethylene. It is also necessary to stock up on a sufficient amount of sand, crushed stone, cement, clay, which will be useful for making mortar and other construction purposes. In the process of making a fireplace, you will need boards or metal sheets for formwork, mesh, and rods for concrete reinforcement.
For the direct manufacture of the fireplace and chimney, materials are used, depending on the type of heating equipment. This can be brick (simple and fireproof), metal parts, etc.
Preparation and front rows
First of all, you should take care of the foundation, which should be larger than the base of the fireplace itself. To create a foundation, dig a pit, then compact the hole well and pour wet sand into it. Crushed stone is poured on top and a mesh tied with wire is installed.
The next stage is to protect the walls from overheating using special asbestos strips. After this, the formwork should be installed and all other procedures for pouring the foundation should be completed. After making the base, you should take a technological break of 18-20 days.
As for the procedures for laying a fireplace, there are two of them in the corner version, and one model is easier to install, the other is more difficult. A lot depends on laying the first row, since any mistake can have a negative impact on all other stages of work. The first row sets the overall dimensions of the entire fireplace, so the thickness of the seams must be maintained with maximum precision.
Firebox
In order for the fireplace not only to serve as a decoration for the room, but also to give off maximum heat, you need to lay out the firebox correctly. In this case, its walls should be located at a certain angle to each other - the side walls are slightly turned outward, and the back one is tilted forward.
The volume of the fireplace insert should be 1/50 of the total size of the room. It is also important to consider the depth, which must be correct. If the firebox is too deep, the fireplace will not heat up enough and the room will be cold. If, on the contrary, the depth is shallow, smoke may occur.
The firebox can be closed or open, and can be solid or combined. To calculate the correct dimensions of the combustion window, the area of the room should be divided by 50.
Pass
To ensure that sparks do not fly out of the chimney and that air changes do not occur, a special threshold, or pass, is installed between the firebox and the smoke chamber. It can be either tray-shaped or even. The pass should not make the pipe narrower.
Arch and chimney outlet
An arch represents the ceiling of a portal; it can be semicircular, arched, or straight. You can buy a chimney ready-made, but such options are usually expensive, so it’s easier to make it yourself from metal or brick. The walls through which the chimney outlet passes must be insulated as much as possible with asbestos material, and the interfloor ceilings should also be protected.
You should not use the same chimney for different heating structures; for a fireplace it must be completely autonomous. The correct chimney height is at least 5 m, if not more. It all depends on the height of the floors of the room. The chimney is made of fire-resistant material. The brick version can be lined with a steel pipe. The optimal shape for a chimney is a cylinder. The fewer obstacles there are to the passage of smoke, the less soot will form on the walls.
Finishing
The final step in the complex process of installing a fireplace is the finishing process. Here, a lot depends on the existing style, as well as the personal tastes of the owners. The finishing is made of decorative materials, ceramics, stone, marble. For example, the fireplace itself and the chimney can be trimmed with stone, and the upper fireplace part can be covered with decorative plaster.
Before you start decorating, you should coat the surface of the fireplace with a strengthening primer. To the brick surfaces to be finished with stone, it is necessary to attach a welded mesh with 10x10 mm cells using self-tapping screws. If necessary, the top of the fireplace is leveled with gypsum plaster. To strengthen the surface, a fiberglass mesh with a cell size of 5x5 mm is used.
Budget decor involves making a special box from plasterboard with subsequent cladding.
External cladding can be very diverse, both in texture and color. Plaster is applied to previously prepared samples of decorative materials, after which tiles are laid on the floor area around the fireplace. The following work on finishing the fireplace is carried out no earlier than two days later.
Installation of fireplaces
How to make a corner fireplace with your own hands? First you need to understand its design features, that is, what components it consists of. The most important elements are the firebox, portal and chimney. Apart from the mentioned parts, it is difficult to imagine a fireplace without a reliable and solid foundation. Let's take a closer look at all the internal components of the structure.
Firebox
The combustion chamber is considered the main component. In most situations, it is made of cast iron or heat-resistant metal. In the latter case, cast iron plates, fireclay or vermiculite are placed on the inside.
Fuel tanks are:
- closed;
- open.
The absence of doors reduces the efficiency of the design. That is why closed fireplaces, for example, with a door made of heat-resistant glass, are currently popular.
Chimney
An equally important part of a DIY brick fireplace is the chimney. It is connected to the firebox using a special pipe. In most cases today, thermoceramics and heat-resistant steel are used for the production of chimneys. Such materials are equipped with multi-layer thermal insulation. Therefore, operation is comfortable and completely safe.
Base
The fireplace base is a place that is located directly under the fuel chamber. Before its arrangement, it is necessary to place a two-layer waterproofing on the prepared foundation. Roofing cardboard with special impregnation or roofing felt are suitable for this.
Portal
It will not be possible to build corner fireplaces with your own hands without cladding. The portal is considered the exterior of any fireplace; it demonstrates its belonging to the design style. Nowadays, very often fireplace lining is made of expensive granite, tuff, and steel modules. The current solution is mosaic made of colorful glass, masonry, and ceramic slabs.
