Therefore, the idea of ​​using it to heat a private home is very productive. Among the many models of heating units of this type, Galan electric boilers look the most attractive. But the reason for this phenomenon, that is, what is more in it - a well-constructed aggressive marketing policy or real technical advantages, is worth understanding especially.

Operating principle of the Galan electrode boiler

Most people who served in the army or studied at universities know how to make a heater from two safety razor blades. And how effective this device is - water boils many times faster than with a standard water heater. This is the electrode boiler of the simplest type.

The principle of its operation is as follows: if an EMF source is connected to two metal electrode plates, then as a result of the breakdown of the medium, a short circuit current arises, which excites the electrons of its atomic structure (ionization). When using alternating current, the process is more intense, since the charged particles swing in both directions. It causes heat, a glow if gas (air) breaks through, or the decomposition of a liquid into its constituent parts (electrolysis).

By physical nature, an electrode boiler and a welding machine are the same device, but operating in different environments. The boiler is different in that it does not have a ballast transformer; its role is played by water.

Electrode type boilers

The Galan boiler is a pipe along the axis of which a stainless steel electrode is installed, connected to the phase line. There are two pipes on it - one incoming, for the flow of cold water, the other outgoing, through which the heated coolant is released into the heating system. It also plays the role of a second electrode connected to the building’s grounding loop.

Since the heating process is very intense, and the pipe is quite narrow, the heated liquid can only move in one direction. There are no natural downward convection currents in it. Therefore, the designers of the boiler called it flow-through, although it would be more correct to use the definition “pump with a pulsating supply of medium.” It is precisely because of pressure pulsation that it is recommended to connect a metal pipe to the outlet pipe, rather than a metal-plastic pipe, which delaminates under such conditions.

The degree of heating is controlled by an electronic unit. It is mounted separately and can be replaced with a more advanced device. The main sensor is installed in the return line. In the direct line - emergency, not allowing the temperature to rise above 85°C. The connection diagram for heat mains and electrical lines is shown in the figure below. Please note that the additional equipment, in addition to the circuit breaker, includes an RCD. This is a mandatory safety requirement, since the boiler body is part of the electrical circuit.

Boilers on heating elements

New Galan heating boilers are manufactured in the same housings as electrode boilers. The model range is divided into series according to the same principle. Ochag water heaters differ in appearance only in the number of wires connected. The “Geyser” and “Vulcan” have the body turned upside down, and both pipes are placed on the side.

The Geyser modification is the most common option. Its popularity is explained by its good power performance with average electricity consumption. The model is suitable for heating a private house up to two floors. Geyser Turbo is available with a power of 9 and 12 kW, electrode units - 9 and 15 kW. The equipment requires filling the system with up to 300 liters of coolant. Power can be supplied from a single-phase or three-phase network, but must be connected to an RCD.

Disadvantages and advantages of Galan boilers

The main advantage of the Galan electric boiler is its small internal volume. The water heats up really quickly - with an electrode design almost instantly, and with heating elements - only a little longer.

The small dimensions are also attractive because this device is easier to install; it does not need to be allocated a separate room. The design is simple, there is nothing to break in them. Compared to boilers from other brands, they have the most attractive price. Unfortunately, that's about all there is good to say about this brand.

Yes, indeed, the direct participation of water in the heating process - electric current passes through it - increases the efficiency of the device to 98%, which gave the manufacturer the basis to use the definition “Galan energy-saving heating boilers.” This, coupled with the notorious ionization, which many sources write about on the Internet, is the basis of the company’s aggressive marketing policy. In fact, a device operating in a mode close to a short circuit cannot save energy; this contradicts the laws of physics.

The small internal volume is not only a plus, but also a minus. The fact is that electric boilers for heating will be economical only if it is possible to use the thermal inertia of water or other coolant.

To do this, they first bring the temperature to the optimal value, using peak values ​​of power consumption, and then reduce it to the minimum required to maintain the given operating mode. If there is little water and its natural circulation in the volume of the heat generator is impossible, it will not be possible to use this technique.

But changing the amount of energy supplied to the boiler is another problem. This can be done, for example, by covering part of the electrode surface with a fluoroplastic plate - a solution used in many electric water heaters. The current strength decreases, and the number of kilowatt-hours “wound” decreases.

Electrode boilers "Galan" are regulated by dissipating power in the temperature control unit. In fact, the amount of electricity it consumes remains unchanged, whether it supplies coolant to the system at a temperature of 85 or 60 degrees.

New Galan heating boilers are regulated in the same way, and stepwise adjustment is possible only with independent intervention in the design. A solution could be the parallel installation of several low-power boilers, fortunately, the dimensions allow this to be done without difficulty. However, it is doubtful that a device that constantly operates at peak power can be economical.

There is also great concern that liquid will flow through the pipes and radiators, through which a considerable electric current has been passed. The operating rules for electrical installations directly prohibit connecting the ground loop of the device to water supply and sewer lines

You can argue as much as you like that “this is not the case here,” but in practice it is better to exclude any possibility of direct contact with electricity. It is not for nothing that an electric boiler of this type is not recommended to be connected to “warm floor” systems with copper pipes, or to be used for heating greenhouses.

We cannot but praise: for these boilers it is recommended to use only branded coolant sold by them. For him, it turns out to be a win-win situation, and how convenient it is for the user of the Galan electric boiler will become clear only after several months of operation. At the very least, it will definitely not be possible to take water for technical needs from heating risers.

Preparation

Algorithm of actions:

  1. Ground.
  2. Protect terminals and live parts from moisture and contact with the surfaces of the unit.
  3. Install a circuit breaker - a switch to cut off the current. A 25 A automatic machine, for example.
  4. Follow the connection diagram recommended in the data sheet.
  5. Observe the connection rule: phase - zero - ground.
  6. Check the tightness of threaded and welded connections.
  7. Minimize, it is better to prevent the possibility of water getting on the body of the ion boiler.
  8. Buy an expansion tank.
  9. Turn off the boiler if ice forms in the heating system and defrost.
  10. Ensure the cleanliness of the pipeline and prevent the penetration of metal shavings and foreign substances into the device and system.

Installation

Sequence of work:

  1. Connect the coarse filter.
  2. After installation, rinse the system thoroughly with Galan inhibitor.
  3. Install the equipment in a vertical position, with the protective cap at the bottom.
  4. Secure the equipment to one of the walls of the room. The connection to the heating system is not decisive.
  5. The unit must be connected to the electrical network by an electrician who has permission to work with electrical equipment up to 1 kW.
  6. Thoroughly strip the ends of the wire of insulation.

Setting the temperature value

Procedure:

  1. Set the coolant outlet temperature within 70-75 ºC.
  2. The input temperature is calculated based on numerous factors: the volume of the heating system, the temperature of the surrounding atmospheric or air space inside the room, the condition and indicator of the thermal insulation protection of the room, the volume of space. On average, this temperature ranges from 40 to 45 ºC.

Requirements for heating systems

When installing an electrode boiler, two factors should be taken into account:

  1. At its output, there is a pulsation of the medium (minor pressure surges).
  2. At a frequency of 50 Hz, the electrolysis of water—its decomposition into oxygen and hydrogen—is quite active.

The heating system is built open and based on two pipes - the upper distribution line and the lower collection pipe. Otherwise, the electrolysis gas will seal it tightly.

The pipe connecting the boiler and expansion tank must be metal, without zinc coating. Metal-plastic delaminates due to pressure changes, and zinc is “eaten up” as a result of electrochemical corrosion when oxygen is deposited on the surface.

When installing collapsible lines, installing radiators and fittings, special attention should be paid to ensuring that the joining materials have approximately the same electrochemical activity (for example, an aluminum metal-plastic pipe and the same heat exchanger) or are reliably isolated from each other. The use of cast iron radiators and galvanized pipes is excluded.

A coolant that has low electrical resistance is used. It is better to use the proprietary Galan composition, which has antifreeze properties. This is due to the fact that the parameters of the boiler are strictly defined during its design, and the location of the phase electrode relative to the ground is designed for a certain electrical permeability of the medium.

At higher values, a short circuit does not occur, but at lower values, overheating and destruction of the electrode occurs. Therefore, it is impossible to fill heating systems with ordinary tap water or car antifreeze, this leads to incorrect operation of the device

. Most negative reviews about Galan boilers were written precisely for this reason.

Boilers using heating elements are less demanding. They work with heating systems of any type - one- or two-pipe, with natural or forced circulation of coolant. You can use regular tap water, but the manufacturer recommends branded water.

Installation rules

There are several requirements for the installation process:

  1. An electric boiler of the Galan brand can only be installed in a vertical position.
  2. The diameter of the outlet pipe must match the diameter of the heating system riser pipe.
  3. Installation height – at or above the heating radiators.
  4. All shut-off valves must be installed behind the expansion tank.
  5. Before filling the coolant, the heating system must be flushed. For these purposes, it is recommended to use the Protector inhibitor.
  6. It is better if distilled water is used as a coolant.
  7. Mandatory inclusion of a stabilizer in the electrical network.


The Galan company is the only manufacturer of flow-through electric heating boilers. The technical characteristics of the equipment are at the highest level, even higher than European ones. Today this is one of the most popular heating equipment options for country houses.

Contents of delivery

The delivery set of the electrode boiler from the manufacturer includes:

  • electrode block with power from 3-50 kW
  • power unit including circuit breaker, modular contactor and digital water thermostat
  • digital thermostat for air climate control unit.

Attachments (expansion tank and pump) are not included in the delivery package, so their parameters are pre-calculated and the equipment is purchased separately.
